Curriculum Information
The curriculum created for the OSU Chinese Flagship Program guides you to the following levels of proficiency and function in Chinese:
- a level 3 (superior) or better level of proficiency in spoken and written language
- the ability to conduct yourself in a professional or academic domain
- the experience of creating an extensive professional presentation of research.
Courses are designed to train you to interact with Chinese in Chinese culture from discussing artifacts of Chinese culture, to negotiating, to participating in formal events. Your performance is the focus of the classes, which are entirely conducted in Chinese.
Beyond the classroom, you will be introduced to our local Chinese community and expected to contribute to community events and projects.
In addition to the current FSI/ILR and ACTFL metrics, Advanced Chinese is considered to be demonstrated by the ability to participate in the major media of China. This includes interpreting oral and written media, discussing them in culturally appropriate ways, and creating presentations in this media for target-culture audiences. Our view of Advanced Chinese is also influenced by our experience with the US/China Links program through which we prepare Americans for internships in Chinese organizations and supervise them through the experience. Admission to the program beginning in Quarter Two requires a 2-2.5 proficiency level. The materials and presentations in all courses are in Chinese. The proposed eight quarter curriculum includes the following courses:
