Application Procedures

Undergraduate students and graduating high school seniors interested in achieving advanced levels of Chinese ability are encouraged to apply to the Chinese Flagship Undergraduate Program at OSU.

Eligibility Requirements

Students who fulfill all of the following conditions are encouraged to apply for the undergraduate Chinese Flagship Program at the Ohio State University:

  1. Is enrolled in the Ohio State University as an undergraduate student
  2. Is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in any non-language major
  3. Has completed or received equivalency credit for OSU Chinese 101, 102 and 103*
  4. Plans to complete at least 6 graduate/honors-level Chinese Flagship courses
  5. Plans to complete a Flagship capstone year in China consisting of: a summer in Qingdao, a semester at Nanjing University and an internship with a Chinese organization related to the non-language major.

* Applicants without previous Chinese language study are encouraged to complete OSU’s Summer Programs in East Asian Concentration (SPEAC, http://deall.osu.edu/speac). The 10-week Chinese language course in SPEAC is equivalent to one year of Chinese at Ohio State.

Application Process

Students not already at the Ohio State University should complete the following:

  1. Application to the Ohio State University
  2. A language placement test (for students not already at Ohio State), to be arranged after admission to OSU

Students admitted to Ohio State should then complete and submit the Chinese Flagship Undergraduate Program application to:

Note: You are advised to keep a copy of all application materials that you send to the Ohio State University. The application and all supporting documents become the property of The Ohio State University and may not be returned to the applicant, forwarded to another institution, or duplicated for any purpose other than the Ohio State application review and admission process. Inactive files are destroyed annually.

The Chinese Flagship Undergraduate Program Scholarship

All applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents are automatically considered for OSU Chinese Flagship Undergraduate Scholarship funds unless otherwise instructed. These funds are reviewed and awarded on a quarterly basis on the basis of merit and availability of funds.

Scholarship recipients must maintain an average 3.4 GPA cumulatively and in Chinese courses to maintain scholarship eligibility.

Application Deadlines

Completed applications for AY09/10 enrollment are due October 26th, 2009.
