Combined Degree

The combined degree program (B.S. or .B.A. + M.A.) is designed for students who would like to demonstrate their ability to write in their target domain by completing a master's thesis in Chinese. The combined degree is also appropriate for students who will require 5 or more years to achieve Superior level proficiency and would like to use that time to complete a graduate degree, as well.

There are many paths to completing a Chinese Flagship combined degree. What they have in common is that students may apply to the Graduate School after completing 135 undergraduate credits and fifth-level Chinese. Upon admission to the graduate school, they may take Flagship Chinese classes for graduate credit and apply them toward a Master’s Degree in East Asian Languages and Literatures, advanced Chinese language concentration. After completion of 5th-level Chinese, Flagship students are paired with native Chinese mentors who are expert in each student’s major field. This mentor helps the student master Chinese discourses in his or her chosen domain.

As often as possible, summers are spent at The Chinese Flagship Qingdao Center polishing the student’s ability to establish relationships with native speakers. In the final year, the student returns to China for one quarter of community work in Qingdao, two quarters on an internship in a Chinese organization and one semester of direct enrollment coursework at Nanjing University. The MA is awarded following successful completion of a master’s thesis written and defended in Chinese.
