1.What kinds of financial support are available for the Chinese Flagship Program (CFP)? What are the deadlines for these scholarships?

A: Students accepted into the Chinese Flagship Program will be eligible for support from the following sources.
*NSEP Flagship Undergraduate Scholarships through the Chinese Flagship Program at The Ohio State University. Scholarships may provide $500-2000 each quarter for qualified students, depending on student qualifications and Federal funding.

*University Scholarships. Ohio State offers a variety of merit scholarships to academically competitive students. http://undergrad.osu.edu/merit.html

2. Where do I find application forms for financial support?

A: The Ohio State University Chinese Flagship Program has compiled a list of all scholarships pertinent to its students.

3. Are SAT/ACT scores required for my application?

A: Students must first be accepted to The Ohio State University. The OSU application stipulates requirements for official ACT or SAT scores. Applicants who have been out of high school for two or more years by their quarter of enrollment are not required to submit scores.

4. What program should I choose in filling out the OSU application form?

A: Students should indicate they are interested in pursuing a major in Chinese (code: CHINESE–BA). After successful university acceptance, students will then inform the department of their choice of their second requested major (e.g., environmental science, logistics, etc).

5. What are the criteria for making admission decisions and for granting financial support?

A: Admission and support will depend on the following, in descending order of importance 1) Academic transcript, 2) Chinese language skill, 3) Academic or occupational area other than Chinese language. Please see the financial support page for more information on requirements.

6. How many words should my statement of purpose be?

A: The statement of purpose is to explain why you would like to enroll in this program and especially why you are interested in studying Chinese. The essay should not exceed 300 words.

7. Is there an interview that takes place with the application?

A: At this time there is no interview process for undergraduate students.

8. When will the academic year commence for the '09 session?

A: The Ohio State University Autumn Quarter begins in September. Exact dates for every year can be found at the University Calendar below.

9. Do I need to attend the summer intensive program?

A: It depends on your level of Chinese when accepted into the program. Students that have never taken Chinese before are strongly encouraged to first attend the SPEAC summer intensive program that will train them to the “intermediate” level in preparation for autumn enrollment in second-level Chinese.

10. Would it be acceptable for a professor who has not had me in their classes to write a recommendation for me?

A: Out of the two recommendation letters, students should have at least one from their Chinese instructors who can verify your language abilities. The other general reference letter can be from any other individual who can speak well to the applicant’s strengths.

11. Can the letter of recommendation be in Chinese from the student's teacher on a study abroad program?

A: Yes, Chinese teacher recommendations may be from a study abroad program instructor.
