PARMA, Ohio -- In his hometown, he's Donny Newman, 24-year-old Parma native, guitar player, 2003 Benedictine grad. In China, he's a star. While studying Chinese as an undergrad and graduate student at Ohio State University (he earned his master's degree this month from the university's renowned Chinese Flagship Program), Newman spent years in China, studying at universities, working at a TV station and appearing on a popular "American Idol"-style reality TV show that pitted foreign college students against one another in a competition to see how well they knew Chinese language and culture. Newman finished in third place -- out of 120 contestants -- and was named "most popular contestant." Now in Washington and working for the Voice of America, Newman recently answered some questions, in English, from PDQ's John Campanelli.
