Admission Criteria

In addition to the general admission criteria, the OSU Chinese Flagship Program requires the following for admission:

  1. Must have a minimum current language level. An interview and/or proficiency test will be conducted at the time of application.
  2. Must show evidence of an established domain of academic or life experience (ex: law, economics, business, music, chemistry, etc.). Applicants must describe their domain experience and potential research in their statement of purpose.

Note: You are advised to keep a copy of all application materials that you send to the Ohio State University. The application and all supporting documents become the property of The Ohio State University and may not be returned to the applicant, forwarded to another institution, or duplicated for any purpose other than the Ohio State application review and admission process. Inactive files are destroyed annually.

Interview Process

  1. Submit all application materials to the Graduate Admissions Office and department office.
  2. If we feel you meet the basic requirements for the program we will schedule online placement tests.
  3. If your Chinese level is high enough we will schedule an oral interview (~30-40 minutes). This is followed by an essay that is based on the interview content and chosen by the interviewer; due one hour after the end of the oral interview. Because it will be chosen from an online website students are required to have internet access at the time of testing. Recommend blocking approximately two hours time total for the test.

Admission decisions will be made by mid-March. If we feel your language still needs improvement, we will ask you to attend the Qingdao summer program in June before coming to OSU in the fall.\
