Overview of Neighborhoods
Columbus is a great place to live. Not only do you have many options of places to live, you will find that it is extremely affordable. You can choose to live downtown or in some of the trendier spots if you love having the nightlife and cultural activities nearby, or you can choose to live in the suburbs, all within a 30 minute drive. If you want to be close to campus, on-campus housing is also an option.
The following table provides you with an idea of where most students would recommend that you live. Depending on what is important to you (location, nightlife, price...) you may want to take the following information into consideration.
Information about locations
Grandview is about 3 miles from Hagerty Hall, where most classes and the Flagship office are located. The apartments in this area are older, but according to some, have more character. Grandview is a peaceful, trendy area with a lot of young professionals and families. Grandview Avenue is home to the Drexel Theatre (art films/independent films) and several popular restaurants. Grandview is close to the popular Lennox Town Center, with a 24-plex theater. You will need to have a car or to ride the public bus (#84) to get to campus.
Bethel Rd./Henderson Rd. area
A 10-20 minute drive from campus, these complexes are northwest of campus, near the corner of Kenny and Henderson Roads (on the edge Upper Arlington). Students who live here have commented that it is quiet and a nice place to live. You can find a lot of well-kept apartment complexes and strip malls for all of your needs.
Short North/Victorian Village
This is the area between campus and downtown (a 5-10 minute drive to campus). Most buildings are older (hardwood floors and the like), although some are newly renovated. The Short North has many trendy restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores, and art galleries. Many houses in this area are privately owned and rented out. To find other available apartments or houses in this area, use the local newspaper, The Columbus Dispatch, at www.dispatch.com. You can also drive around this area and look for “For Rent” signs.
Hillliard is northwest of campus and is approximately a 15-20 minute drive to campus. There are plenty of strip malls, restaurants and grocery stores nearby. This area is also very close to 1-270, one of the main highways in Columbus.
Dublin is northwest of campus and is approximately a 20 minute drive. Dublin is known for its Irish festival, great schools, and quiet communities.
Other areas that were recommended include Easton, Polaris and German Village.
